When man-made or natural disaster strikes, we are called to respond generously. The activities listed below are recent examples of how, in the face of true adversity, and as Edison International employees, we have never shirked from the challenge to provide relief, wherever we can.
Southern California Wildfires Many homes were lost during the October 2007 Southern California wildfires. Edison employees supported victims of this unfortunate disaster by donating to the company's "Fire Storm Victim's Fund." In addition to employee support, the company donated $250,000 to a multitude of American Red Cross chapters and other nonprofit organizations serving the communities hardest hit by the fires.
American Red Cross Through the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund, employees gave generously to help the Tsunami and Katrina victims. Employees have also taken the American Red Cross courses in disaster training in order to be even more effective when an emergency arises.
If there always seems to be a blood shortage, it is because medical advances have increased the need for blood and blood products. At the request of the American Red Cross, employees have donated regularly at Blood Drives held on-site at Edison corporate offices and several plant locations.
The Asian Tsunami It is not often that the world’s collective sense of solidarity and compassion is captured by a single event. The earthquake-spawned tsunami that ravaged so many countries in southern Asia and eastern Africa in December 2004 was one such event. Proving once again how committed they are to making a difference when disaster hits, the Edison employees and the SCE affinity groups quickly kicked into gear and launched a coordinated effort aimed at raising funds through four non-profit relief agencies: the American Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity, International Relief Teams, and World Vision. Edison employees and Edison International contributed a combined total of nearly $190,000 to this extraordinary fundraising effort.
Hurricane Katrina Relief Efforts In response to the devastation caused by hurricane Katrina when it battered the Gulf Coast in August 2005, Edison employees donated more than $235,000 to support relief efforts, and had the first $125,000 matched by the company. In addition, Edison International made a corporate contribution of $100,000.
But employees didn't just send money. Some helped victims firsthand by traveling to the cities ravaged by Katrina's devastation. Other employees were willing to cash out some of their vacation time and donate it to hurricane relief through the American Red Cross. Still others raised money in creative ways within their community or workplace.
